| Councilman Escareño Missed 3 of 4 Council Meetings in 2005 March 8, 2005 Editor, WatchOurCity.com Huntington Park, CA - According to public records confirmed by the City Clerk's office, incumbent councilman Ed Escareño was absent during 4 of 5 council meetings held between January and March 7 of this year. The city clerk's office confirmed that Ed Escareño has not had any form of communication with the city explaining his absence. In any other job, this would constitute grounds for automatic dismissal; in the military or police force, cause for dereliction of duty. In Huntington Park? Business as usual. Reportedly, councilman Ric Loya proposed a measure during the March 7 council meeting to stop payment commission pay of council members after more than 2 unexcused absences. Monthly council salary of $1,023.88, plus $1,950 Redevelopment Commission pay, totals $2,975.00. City has no ordinance penalizing salary for excessive absence. Escareno quite literally walks away with close to $6,000 from public funds by not showing up at 4 of the 5 city council meetings this year and getting paid. The Mayor in Compton was indicted and convicted for $7,000 of alleged misuse of public funds, but at least he attended every council meeting. Where is the District Attorney's corruption unit? Rosario Marin does have a close relationship with District Attorney Steve Cooley. Last April, the Los Angeles Times reported that Cooley appointed Rosario Marin to a special blue ribbon commission looking into L.A. County jail irregularities. Why doesn't the D.A. look into irregularities here in the city? Does Escareno think Rosario will protect him from a District Attorney's investigation because of her friendship with Cooley? All three are Republicans, after all. Escareno was brought to the voters in 2001 courtesy of Rosario Marin and the endorsement and monetary contribution of State Senator Martha Escutia. Escareño is up for reelection today. |
